From South Georgia Museum
Grytviken cemetery is about a 5 minute walk from the museum and contains the graves of many whalers and sealers who worked on or around the island. Each whaling station had a graveyard and there are around 200 graves on the island. Many people come to visit the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton who died in 1922. The site also includes the grave of Felix Artuso, an Argentine submariner who died during the 1982 conflict.
Two grave markers in the museum collection were taken from the site for protection in 1995. One of the markers is from the grave of surgeon W.H. Dyre who was working on the "Esther" when he died in 1846. The markers can be seen in the photographs below and replicas have been erected in the cemetery.
