CAN YOU HELP THE SOUTH GEORGIA MUSEUM WITH YOUR OLD PHOTOGRAPHS? POSTED MAY 29TH 2014
The South Georgia Museum are looking for photos taken inside the old whaling stations stores at Grytviken Whaling Station before 1982…namely the Engineering Workshop and the Main Store (Magasinet). These are the buildings numbered 10 and 11 on various recent maps of Grytviken, including those printed in Bjorn Basberg’s book “Shore Whaling Stations of South Georgia”.
The South Georgia Museum will be undertaking a project to move stores from one building to another and we are very keen to make sure we identify and catalogue the original stores correctly. Can you help us with this important and challenging task? Your photographs may help us to ensure the stores are authentically and accurately preserved and displayed for the future; photographs taken inside these buildings prior to 1982 could be a very valuable tool to assist us.
If you have any photographs or slides you can scan them and put them on a disk, or you can send original photos/slides. Please post them to: The South Georgia Museum, Grytviken, South Georgia, via Falkland Islands, South Atlantic. If posting images, please also to drop us an e mail to museum@sght.org to say images are coming.
One-off images (especially if the files are not too big) can be e mailed to museum@sght.org
Please describe when and where you took the photographs, and include as much other information as you can remember to assist us.
If you are unsure which buildings you have taken your photographs of whaling station stores in, please send them anyway and we will be able to work out which building it is.
Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you.
